Desert Mischief

Unfortunately, very unfriendly owner & It’s a shame that, as a paying customer, you don’t seem to come first in this store. We were looking for a birthday card and a gift bag for my father. When I asked how much the card cost, the owner replied rudely that the price was written on it. Unfortunately, it wasn’t, so he had to check it for me, which clearly annoyed him. At checkout, I asked about the price of another item but decided not to purchase it. After paying for the card, I asked for it, and the owner claimed I hadn’t paid. I explained that I had paid for the card and not the more expensive item, but he didn’t believe me. He said he would issue a refund because I was “too much trouble.” Only after checking the receipt did he realize I had indeed only paid for the card, and he handed it to me reluctantly, saying I should leave his store with my “lousy English” and my “lousy daughter.” It’s unfortunate that the shopping experience in this store was so negative. It’s also disappointing to feel unwelcome as a tourist. Perhaps the owner should consider a different location for his store if he only wants to serve people who speak English as their first language. And just to note: we’ve lived in the U.S. for three years now and have always been complimented on our English. I truly believe this wasn’t a communication issue, but rather a personal issue the owner has.

While browsing in the adult section the store clerk informed us it was a “gay” shop and asked if my girlfriend and I saw the flag in front. Of course we did and thought and what does it matter. Is the store only expecting and welcoming to gay customers? How rude and not inclusive . He asked if we were just educating ourselves. It’s not like we are naive. We just wanted to look around. Thank you for making us feel uncomfortable and unwelcome.

Desert Mischief is an interesting place to visit because they have such a wide variety of things from gift cards to candles to magnets to souvenir type things as well as things for adults in fact there is an adult section in the rear of the store to keep it separated. They have great prices on the things that I buy and they also have sales almost every week on certain products and today was on all products in the store were 10% off so I think it's a great place to visit and if you're downtown there's so much other shopping around it places to eat so it should be popular with tourists as well as with locals.
